What is Common Core Doing?
It’s time to face reality. Common core was a program of study designed to create people who were able to assimilate information on the most basic level. They were given enough knowledge to be able to read a text and do some basic math. However, the job market has changed. Companies require people who can analyze numbers and texts in order to take decisions. Yet the education system in place is still designed to produce face value comprehension skills. There is something really wrong in this approach. The Washington Post has pointed out that ever since common core was implemented, dropout rates have increased from 15% to 30%.  U.S. Secretary of Education John King himself has conceded that this system is designed such that 70% of students will fail. A Huffington Post article says, “In 2013, 39% of students were considered ready for college math and 38% were prepared for college-level reading. But in 2015, only 37% were prepared for college”. Why then are we keeping such a system in place?  We can see in Georgia, a common core state, that the highest graduation rate as of 2016 was 79.2%. However, in Virginia, which is not a common core state, has a startling overall graduation rate of 91.3%.

Is the Investment Worth the Outcome?

The amount each of these five countries spends per pupil on their high school education isn’t cheap. The United States, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland and Norway have been ranked the top 5 spenders on the world in secondary education. Here they are in order from largest to smallest within the top 5. However, when we look up the ranking of each of these countries in PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) index, we find some quite surprising results. Here are the top 5 countries in order of first to fifth. Singapore Hong Kong Canada Japan China Here are the rankings of the 5 top spenders Luxemborg - 34th Austria - 20th Switzerland - 8th Norway -19th United States - 41st Here are the spendings of the top 5 countries ranked in PISA China - $1593 Japan - $8301 Canada- $11,835 Hong Kong - $8,247 Singapore - $7,200 This shows that spending isn’t really proportionate to the quality of education being imparted to yo

The Difference Between Texas and Puerto Rico Flood Responses

Hurricane Harvey was a category 4 tropical storm that made contact with land on August 17,2017. Estimated damage was about 125 billion dollars. After hurricane Harvey, the city of Houston received large amounts of aid and help from FEMA. More than 15 billion dollars in aid was approved by Congress. FEMA housed about 70,000 people in hotels and slowly that number declined to 47,000. Due to most housing units in Houston being insured, there were many insurance payouts. In fact, 608 million dollars were given in payouts. There were 107 confirmed casualties. Houston's developed facilities enabled the city to brace the impact of the storm and allow for minimal damage. The same cannot be said about Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria was a category 5 hurricane. It caused about 91.9 billion dollars in damages. It made contact with land on September 16, 2017. Puerto Rico received about 16 billion dollars in total aid with no plans of expanding that package. Electricity has not yet been re

Why do Women Make Less Compared to Men?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2013 reported that women made approximately $706 a week whereas men made approximately $860 a week. The top paying fields are: Medicine STEM However only 24% of people in STEM are female, and about 40% of people in medicine. The reason women don’t make more compared to today’s calculations is that they don’t participate in high-paying fields. Why does this happen? Because women are discouraged from majoring in such fields during college. They also usually don’t have a lot of experience in high school of high-level math and science which makes college-level math and science very hard for them. The average starting salary in STEM is $65000/year The average starting salary in medicine is $85000/year Fields in which most women are employed and average starting salaries Elementary/ middle school teachers - $36000/year Secretaries and Administrative assistants - $37000/year A good article to read on the problem of lack
