My Progression with Technology

Hello everyone! This might be the first post where I am addressing you personally. Today I wanted to talk to you all about my experience with technology. I think this will be especially interesting for some as I am one of the many people who has seen multiple revolutionary changes in technology within my lifetime. Today I will be taking you through the different computers/laptops I have owned and operated on over a long period of time. Here we go:

Computer 1: Dell Dimension XPS R400@400MHz 256MB RAM VINTAGE COMPUTER PENTIUM II
This was the first computer I remember ever using. The primary usage of the computer was to play games (keep in mind I was about 5)

Computer 2: Lenovo ThinkPad

This technically wasn't mine. My father got it from his office for working on the go. It was at this time I was first exposed to the many different capabilities of Excel. This was truly one of the first machines that sparked my love for software and hardware. It was at that time truly amazing to me how the capabilities of the huge desktop I had in my room was compressed into this portable machine. My age at this time was around 7 - 9.

Computer 3: Dell Studio XPS 1647 Laptop. Core i5, M430,4GB, 320GB HDD, Win 10

My family paid $1000 for this machine. At the time I felt that technology couldn't get any better and that software had peaked. I had it from 2010 to 2016. I learned how to code for the first time on this device and even though it is outdated, it still holds a special place in my heart.

Computer 4 (My current machine that I love): Dell Inspiron 13 7000 Series 2-in-1 Laptop

This is the piece of technology I currently use. I use it for multiple purposes and originally got it when I started taking computer science seriously as a possible career option. I've made apps on it, written programs and done a lot of multi-tasking. To me, it is truly a work of art and every time I open to work on it, I am just a little more inspired (hence I think the name Inspiron is apt).

What is Common Core Doing? It’s time to face reality. Common core was a program of study designed to create people who were able to assimilate information on the most basic level. They were given enough knowledge to be able to read a text and do some basic math. However, the job market has changed. Companies require people who can analyze numbers and texts in order to take decisions. Yet the education system in place is still designed to produce face value comprehension skills. There is something really wrong in this approach. The Washington Post has pointed out that ever since common core was implemented, dropout rates have increased from 15% to 30%.  U.S. Secretary of Education John King himself has conceded that this system is designed such that 70% of students will fail. A Huffington Post article says, “In 2013, 39% of students were considered ready for college math and 38% were prepared for college-level reading. But in 2015, only 37% were prepared for college”. Why then a...

My First Week at Goonj

Hello Everyone! This summer I have taken up an internship at an Indian NGO called Goonj. I have just finished my first week and it was a fun one. The main focus of this week was shadowing one of the members of the organization. I shadowed an individual who was in charge of packaging ecologically sustainable and reusable sanitary napkins for women in villages that cannot access regular disposable sanitary napkins due to the stigma attached with menstruation or the cost of buying such items. Here are some pictures of the process: Above are some of the completed packs of 10 pads which I spent my entire day making Above are some of the lovely ladies who cut and trim the cloth which goes into making these pads. Today, I started my campaign to sell bags made out of donated cloth to stores. I had to go door to door knocking and canvassing of the area.  I am happy to report however that I got a 40% conversion rate from door to door knocking! I plan to visit more shops ...
